Unwrapping Investor Risk in the Global Plastic Containers and Packaging Sector
The most familiar environmental issue associated with plastics is packaging waste. Accounting for 36% of all plastic produced, plastic packaging – much of which remains single-use – is increasingly recognised by consumers and policymakers for its damaging environmental impact.

Planet Tracker has identified 83 publicly traded global companies in the Plastic Container & Packaging (PC&P) sector which individually have an annual revenue in excess of USD 100 million and derive at least 10% of their revenue from this sector.

These companies have an estimated USD 54 billion in annual revenue (89% of the whole sector’s revenue) and USD 126 billion market capitalisation (34% of the whole sector’s market capitalisation). The 20 largest players in the PC&P sector together account for 62% of the sector’s revenue and have a combined market capitalisation of USD 82 billion. Just 70 investors control 60% of plastics production from these 83 companies. The companies in the PC&P sector are facing a possible pincer movement as policymakers and consumers are mobilising to push the industry into taking responsibility for the single-use plastics they produce and sell. In turn, this raises the threat that PC&P investments could become stranded.

With the growing risks this sector faces, we encourage investors and financiers to be aware of this concentration risk.

Join us for a discussion on the challenges facing the PC&P sector and the possible approaches to achieve a transition to a more sustainable future, introduced and moderated by Gabriel Thoumi, CFA FRM, Head of Plastics Programme and Director of Financial Markets at Planet Tracker, in conversation with our distinguished panel of experts:
- Jodie Roussel, Senior Public Affairs Manager - Packaging & Environment, Nestlé
- Courtney Lowrance, Managing Director, Sustainable Banking and Corporate Transitions, Citi
