EU Investor Exposure to Plastics Policies: Resins, Risks and Pollution
The EU resins and plastics packaging industries, valued in the hundreds of billions of Euros, are the cause of much of the of land-based and water-based plastics pollution in the EU, with direct, well-described negative impacts on EU nature and biodiversity. Because of these impacts, these industries face financial and reputational risks – from declines in upstream production margins to increases in downstream regulatory waste management responsibilities and levies, growth in product substitution and surges in corporate, government and consumer pressure on industry to reform, driven by its dire impacts on nature and biodiversity.

Within this landscape, Planet Tracker will discuss current research linking nature and biodiversity collapse to plastics pollution and to these two upstream industries and the institutional investors and lenders financing the industry. Planet Tracker will describe the financial and natural capital risks facing these investors, and segment risks by exposure, scale, asset class and geography. Planet Tracker will conclude by providing easy-to-apply EU case studies demonstrating how investors exposed to the EU resins and plastics packaging industries are unaware of their financing of subsequent negative impacts on nature and biodiversity, along with recommending tasks they can execute to manage these risks to better inform decision-making.
